Leveraging Your Natural Talents

January 6, 2011

Small Business Thursday Tip of the Week.

Use your talents to drive your success!

As long as you haven’t been living in a box, you’ve undoubtedly heard the story:

The Columbus Dispatch discovered a homeless man along Ohio’s I-71 claiming to have “the God-given gift of voice,” and what began as your everyday viral video has exploded into a life-changing experience for one man. A couple of days ago he was a panhandler; today he’s the most in-demand voice personality in the world, thanks to offers from countless radio stations, voiceover gigs and even the Cleveland Cavaliers.

His name is Ted Williams, and he’s an ex-radio announcer according to the note he scrawled on a piece of cardboard that he used to solicit change from drivers. And wow, does Williams ever deliver for a dollar. Williams tells the Dispatch about his struggles, but thankfully “alcohol and drugs and a few other things” haven’t diminished Williams’ velvety vocal cords, and he says he’s two years clean now.

“I have a god given gift of voice. I’m an ex-radio announcer who has fallen on hard times. Please! Any help will be gratefully appreciated. Thank you and God bless. Happy holidays,” reads Williams’ roadside sign for help.

Now Ted Williams, whose deep, velvety radio voice and touching story prompted an outpouring of sympathy and job offers from across the country, has become an overnight sensation. He’s America’s hottest — and most improbable — star.

On Thursday, Williams, who was living in a tent near a highway in Columbus, Ohio, just days ago, was in New York for an emotional reunion with his 90-year-old mother, media appearances, and to do some commercial voiceover work. On NBC’s “Today” show, he described his previous 48 hours as “outrageous.” “There’s no way in the world that I could have ever imagined that I would be — I mean, just have all of this just all of a sudden come into this portion of my life,” he said during a live interview in the program’s studio.

So let’s do a little recap, shall we:

  1. A homeless man with a sign on the side of the road that reads: “I have the God-given gift of voice”.
  2. A reporter videos him and uploads it to Youtube and with hours the video had millions of views.
  3. As a result of his side of the road audition, he gets job offers from The Cleveland Cavs and NFL Films among others…

So, what have we learned:

That’s right. We all have our gifts. The catch is to leverage those gifts to assist you with your personal or business success.

Ted Williams got a bit lucky, granted… However, when the moment showed itself he seems to have embraced it and welcomed it. Carpe Diem, they say…

What are your hidden talents that could rock the world like Ted Williams’ golden vocal cords? We’re waiting…

Please share your gifts, talents and comments below.
