How one tech-challenged business owner went from Internet nightmare to a steady flow of excited customers in less than 3 days.
If you aren't using a blog, then you are missing the most dynamic opportunity in HISTORY do drive customers to ANY BUSINESS!
Pretty bold words, but let me explain.
It's become an accepted fact that if you want to do business, you need to do it on the Internet and NOW! The Internet has literally exploded over the past decade, and it shows no signs of slowing down. If anything, it's speed is INCREASING. You simply cannot afford to watch it pass you by. To do so means to go the way of the dinosaur. It is that important to any business. In fact, 50% of your customers are looking for you online RIGHT NOW!
But here's the problem: Literally thousands of people have no idea how to tackle the Internet and get started. It can be pretty daunting if you don't know the ropes, the lingo, the strange customs. It's a lot like going to a foreign country with the wrong currency and no passport. 'Dice me il directione?'
Huh?
Right, well it doesn't have to be that bad.
Speaking of foreign languages: What is a blog?
"Blog" is an abbreviated version of "weblog," which is a term used to describe web sites that maintain an ongoing chronicle of information. A blog is a frequently updated, personal (or business) website featuring diary-type commentary and links to articles on other Web sites. Blogs range from the personal to the political, and can focus on one narrow subject or a whole range of subjects.
Myth: A blog isn't a website. . . False, absolutely false! A blog is just a different kind of (much simpler and friendly) website.
OK, now that we've gotten the dictionary stuff out of the way. What this means for YOU and your business is that you can now cause people to find you and get interested in you, just by saying stuff and keeping in touch with them. Pretty cool. And the best part is that you can do this for almost zero overhead. Unlike running a store, you don't have expensive rent, or furniture to buy, or most of the usual stuff to worry about, and that's good.
But many people really don't know how to dive in and get started. Some spend a small fortune on web-designers, graphic artists and other tech guys to put it all together for them, and that's fine, except there is one small problem here: they wind up being hijacked by their tech guys for the inevitable changes and updates that a website requires. This makes the business OWNER completely dependent on his webmaster. YIKES! That's not what we want at all.
BUT THERE IS ANOTHER WAY - A much better way. I call it, "The Way of The Blog", and it's dead simple once you get your feet wet. One guy who used our system considered the Internet completely over his head and beyond his experience. He actually sighed every time we mentioned it to him. He was very concerned about expensive update costs. But he knew he needed to get his business running online in order to compete. He had been trying to advertise in the local papers but found that very expensive, and very time consuming. It would take him months sometimes before he figured out what his customers wanted. He tried creating meetings in the evenings to educate people, but his attendance rate was very low. People were busy and had a hard time keeping the time commitment. He had even tried having a website built for him before, but he found himself stuck and dependent on his webmaster to make any changes and updates - and this was yet another expense he didn't need.
Finally, almost out of desperation he came to us for an answer. So we set him up with a blog, which he was easily able to customize from his own personal 'cockpit' and where he could add information, write stories and other resources he knew his customers wanted. It took all of 3 days before he was able to start e-mailing people and inviting them to read his blog. And it could have been faster than that, but he wanted to be sure that he really understood everything first. After that he was off and swimming, just like a duck to water.
Now let's talk about Wordpress, which is the kind of Blog we create:
Software that provides a method of managing your website is commonly called a CMS or "Content Management System". Many blogging software programs are considered a specific type of CMS. They provide the features required to create and maintain a blog, and can make publishing on the Internet as simple as writing an article, giving it a title, and organizing it under (one or more) categories. While some CMS programs offer vast and sophisticated features, a basic blogging tool provides an interface where you can work in an easy and, to some degree, intuitive manner while it handles the logistics involved in making your composition presentable and publicly available. In other words, you get to focus on what you want to write, and the blogging tool takes care of the rest of the site management.
WordPress is one such advanced blogging tool and it provides a rich set of features. Through its Administration Panels, YOU control everything in your blog. It is so easy to add a post (or a new page), just push a button, and VOILA! it's published on the Internet, instantly! WordPress goes to great pains to see that your blog posts look good, the text looks beautiful, and the html code it generates conforms to web standards. In a word (or 2) Wordpress kicks A$$!
About now, I bet you are wondering how much this will cost you, well, we've figured out a way to make this very easy for anybody to get started, this way there is no barrier to entry for anyone who wants to get on line and get started right away. And then you still have to pay him every time you want an update!
