Changing the Theme in WordPress

February 22, 2012

WordPress, by far, is the platform of choice for those that wish to have a blog or to build a website. The primary reason for this is that WordPress has themes already built in to the system that allow you to change the look of your site whenever you choose; however, before you decide on your theme, you must learn how to perform a theme change within WordPress.  The good news here is that changing themes in WordPress is quite easily done.  Even if you are new to WordPress, you will be able to change the look of your site in a matter of minutes.

Step 1) Your first step will be to choose the theme you plan to use.  WordPress comes with a few default themes, but you can also find many free themes and paid themes available for download.  You can search from within WordPress, or you can perform a Google search that will allow you to find dozens of great themes.

Step 2) The next step is learning how to install the theme you use.  If you find a theme from within WordPress, all you must do is click on the Install button; however, if you download the theme from the internet, you will save this file somewhere on your computer.  You will then, from within your Dashboard, navigate to the Themes section on the left hand side of the screen.  Then you will click on Add New.  A dialog box will open, and from here you will browse your computer for the theme file that you downloaded. *<Appearance->Themes->Install Themes-> Upload->Choose File> Click on the correct theme and click open. <Click install now> WordPress automatically installs this theme for you and puts it in the correct location.

Step 3) Now when you go to the Themes portion of your Dashboard, the new theme you have just installed will be one of the choices you can use to update your current theme.  So, go to your Themes tab and click Activate next to the new theme you have just installed.  Upon doing so, your site’s theme will be automatically updated.

As you can see, it is not all that difficult to change themes from within WordPress, and now that you know how, you can change your theme as often as you like.
