Installing Plugins in WordPress

February 8, 2012

If you have made it this far, you have obviously decided that blogging or having a website is best done from the WordPress platform.  Once you have installed WordPress, and you are ready to begin upgrading your site, you will need to learn about how to install the various plugins that can greatly help your site.  Plugins can help make your site more user-friendly, as well as professional in demeanor.  Plugins also help the major search engines find and rank your site, as well.  There are several plugins available, and many are considered standard, or much needed, plugins, while others are simply based on personal preference.

The plugins that you will definitely need are Akismet, All-in-One SEO pack, and Google XML sitemap.  There are others that can greatly help your site, as well, such as the Contact Form, Ping Optimizer, Adsense, and many more.  What becomes the question is how do you install these plugins?  The following information will make the installation of your needed and chosen plugins much more easily accomplished.

You will begin by logging into your WordPress account and signing in to your Dashboard.  On the upper left hand side of your screen, you will see the Plugins tab.  When you click on the Plugins tab, all of your current plugins will be visible.  You can now click on the Add New button and a new screen will pop up including a search box for you to search for the plugins that you will want to add.

When you know exactly which plugin you need, it is much easier to search, as you can type that into the search field and WordPress will find each plugin for you.  It will also give you additional choices, so you may be able to find plugins that you did not even know about.  When you find the plugin that you are wanting to install, click on the Install button on the right hand side of the page.  Once you click install, WordPress automatically installs the plugin for you.  You will then be given the option to activate the Plugin or return to the install page.  Do not forget that installing a plugin is not the same as activating the plugin, so be sure to activate all plugins that you want to have active on your site.

Not only do these plugins do so much for your site, but the best part is that you can do all of this yourself without having coding experience.  You can have a professional looking website that you have created all on your own.
