Adding a New Post in WordPress

March 7, 2012

So you have set up your new WordPress blog and are eager to begin writing posts.  Now what?  The following information will explain how you can add your very first post to your new WordPress blog.

The first step is that you will need to login to your WordPress Administration Dashboard with the credentials that you used when you set up your site.  It will ask for your username and your password.  Once completed, your Dashboard will open.

Along the top of the page you will see different tabs.  Feel free to explore so that you get a good feel for how the dashboard in WordPress operates.  WordPress is one of the easiest content management systems available. The Dashboard is extremely user-friendly.

When you open your dashboard, you will see that you already have a post called Hello World!  You will have the option to edit, delete, or leave as-is this post.  What you want to do right now is write your own very first blog post to introduce yourself, your brand, products, or services.  What you will do now is look at the left hand side of the page of the Dashboard.  You will see that there are many tabs to choose from, which can seem overwhelming at first; but, you will find that everything has some form of guidance for you so that you can ensure that your posts and your site looks as you intended.

Along the left you will see tabs labeled Dashboard (where you are right now), Updates, Posts, Media, Links, and so on.  Where it says Posts, left click and it will open up the posts menu below the word Posts. Your screen will change and along the top of the page it will say Add New Post.  Below that is the space for a title, and below that, the space for the body of your post.

Go ahead and create a title in the Title area, then write your post in the space below that.  You will see that the space for the body of your post has an editor much like that in Microsoft Word, where you can bold your text, add hyperlinks, and so on.  There are also the choices just above the editor to add or upload other materials into your post, such as photos, videos, or other media.

Once you have completed your post, added your extras, and confirmed that it is the way that you want it to appear, you will then need to look at the upper right hand corner of your screen.  There is a small square that says Publish.  Within this square it details the status of your post.  If you are satisfied with your post, click on the Publish button at the bottom of this square.  If you want to see how your post will look publicly before you actually publish to the web, you can click on the Preview button.  When you are satisfied with your posts appearance and you have proofed for any spelling or grammatical errors, click on the Publish button.  Your screen will change periodically, and then up at the top of the page it will tell you that your post has been published successfully, and there will be a link to View Post.  Click that link and you will be taken to your very first published post on your new WordPress site. Congratulations!
